Pros and cons of Sygic UK & Ireland: GPS Navigation app for iPhone and iPad

Sygic UK & Ireland: GPS Navigation app good for

We use tomtom in the US and bought this is a lower cost option for the UK. We have actually found it superior to the tomtom in many ways. Works great with any 3G/3GS phone. Note this uses the Teleatlas maps - same as tomtom - just a different front end, which happens to be very comprehensive.
I used this in Ireland (with no active data plan). I downloaded the maps prior to my trip, and used this GPS app every time I drove. There are a few small quirks that made it a tad difficult to use, but regardless of ease of use, this is still a MUST for anyone who is going to drive in Ireland. I was able to comfortably navigate to some very "off the beaten path" places to truly get a full Ireland experience. If you are going to Ireland and are going to be driving at all, spend the $30 and keep your sanity and safety!!! (used on a ipad2 with no data plan)
We took a one week trip to Ireland. I considered updating my TomTom with the uk/Ireland map for $50, but chose this app for $25. The app was our primary navigation method and it got us to our destination every time. It took me a little while to figure out the user interface which is a bit clumsy as compared to the TomTom. It also took me a while to figure out that I couldnt put my iPhone 4 into airplane mode and have the GPS function, so I discovered that I could turn off the cell network by going to general settings>network. There were a few glitches where it seemed that Sygic just stopped tracking and I ended up power cycling the phone to bring it back to life. Theres also a mode where the tracking is held off until you do a "return." Aside from these issues, its a nice app and superior to the TomTom in that it fits nicely in my pocket and its so much easier to pan and zoom the map. We used it numerous times while walking through cities so we didnt get lost. I also have GPS Drive and Telenav apps, this one is superior to both of those. I am considering buying the US version of Sygic as a backup for the TomTom - just to be safe to cover for some time if it were to fail at a critical time. Oh btw- I like the voice navigation for this app much more than the TomTom. The guidance is well designed and voice quality is excellent.
My wife and just tour Ireland. We are rookie travelers and this was our first trip to Ireland . We were unsure of ourselves but nonetheless decided to rent a car and tour ourselves. We rented our car left Shannon airport and nervously left for the Cliffs of Mohrer. We had absolutely no problems! The dreaded round-a-bouts were no problems, the verbal directions were great. The maps were better. We drove to Kenmare,Clifden,Galway and Dublin. The verbal directions were 95 percent accurate every so often the system got confused but with a little patience it righted itself. This happened once in Dublin as we were circling quickly around some one way confusing streets. The other incident(which were few) happened in out of the way roads and again quickly righted itself. My wife and I are rookie travelers and would not hesitate to purchase and recommend this gps system. Even when I would second guess my wife and this system I was proved wrong and learned not to second guess my wife or this system! We used an iPad 3.
Dont plan to use this app for navigation--your trip will be over before its installed. I encountered the hang up at "initialization" at first attempt and after deleting and re-attempting 3 times. I tried the re-boot numerous times, even tried to download to a PC thinking I might sync to my IPad but the download has hung up on the PC as well. All of this has taken hours and some expense as each download requires I purchase extra allocation on my satellite system. Looks like a good package but you couldnt pay me to spend more time and effort finding out.
We went to Ireland and Scotland for two weeks on our honeymoon. I downloaded this app to use while we were driving around. It worked great! My phone didnt work there, so I needed an app that loaded everything into the phone. The routing was excellent. It got us everywhere we needed to go. A couple of times, it couldnt find the exact address, which wasnt the apps fault, but it got us close enough that we found the places within a minute or two. It made our drive through the countries easy. Without it, we would have had to have our face buried in a road map to figure out where we were going. This way, we could concentrate on the scenery and the drive.

Some bad moments

I spent a week in Ireland and this app was all but useless. I could use it to view maps in a browsing sense, but it DOES NOT WORK as a GPS without connecting to a data netwok. The iphone uses a-GPS (assisted GPS), meaning that (at least in Ireland) it cannot tell where it is without the data netwok. I was sold on this app based on the fact that I did not want to pay for data roaming. Instead, I got to Ireland and found out that I would have to pay the car rental company an additional €60 for a GPS device because this software was useless as a turn-by-turn unit. What a letdown.
Never worked offline with either my iphone5 or ipad! Had to buy a car navigation to get around the Ireland country side!!
Complete waist of money app is compatible with latest iOS. App wont even launch!
