I traveled to Ireland last year and bought a garmin GPS with Ireland map chip... Of course for this years trip I couldnt find the chip with the euro maps. So reluctantly I searched for a GPS App. I saw low cost ones which were reviewed horribly. Then I came across this APP and saw good reviews. I wasnt happy with paying $24.99 after spending hundreds the year prior, but I figured it was a small price to avoid aggravation during the trip!
I got to Dublin and got my rental car, which was off site, and started it up and realized I forgot to get a Irish SIM card for cell service to use the GPS! Luckily this APP worked with only the GPS signal in my iPhone 4S, it guided me flawlessly to Galway without a hitch, no Internet used at all! That alone saved me SO much frustration.
I NEVER write reviews, but I had to share that this app is worth the $$. Buy with confidence.
Pros:
-Detailed maps!!! Even in deep county roads in Ireland
- lane assistance when on motor way, shows which lanes you should stay in via a blue line on map, great feature!
- voice is a pleasant British lady, sounds good and not annoying.
- Gave good directions for upcoming round abouts, says to take "3 exit". So you can count while focusing on the madness of merging with all the lanes of vehicles instead of having to look at the phone.
- again detailed maps! Was surprised how detailed it was!
Cons:
- Price should be $9.99 really... But compared to what else is available its by far the best deal! Avoid the crap ones, Ireland is a very difficult place to drive if youre from the states!
- accuracy of best route, so this APP will get you where your going without a hitch... But my cousin (Irish) knew a better or faster way several times. Oh well, the app still works excellent. Just expect a local to say there might be a faster route.
- searching function... It allows you to search for land marks. Im spoiled by using Yelp to find businesses and then getting exact directions from there. This APP had pre-loaded businesses and landmarks in it. It is very very basic and other than finding large known attractions or towns... You will not be able to type in a store and have it guide you. Youll need the intersection or address.
***TIPS***
- buy a window mount for your phone, I didnt and my phone fell off the dash so many times while going around the round abouts! Its a huge safety issue!
- Ireland doesnt really have addresses, so use lat/long coordinates or intersections.
- Save the car rental place as a favorite!!! Most are off site but near the airport. I couldnt find the location last year and it was horrible!! Seriously save it so you dont stress about missing flights and paying extra for the rental!
- buy the full rental insurance! I never do in the US, but highly recommend it in Ireland/UK. Its a very common thing to have small accidents due to the narrow streets, driving on the left side, and the roundabouts are a mess to navigate... Nevermind the wet roads!
- if you plan to drive alot, buy a diesel. Much better economy! BUT!!! Fill with diesel!!! In the US the pumps are green for diesel... In Ireland they were Black! Petrol/gas was green!!! Check and double check before you pump!!!!
